A Greater Purpose

On April 30, 2019, a tragic event unfolded at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte when a shooter entered a classroom and opened fire. A brave student’s selfless act of tackling the shooter allowed others to escape, but he lost his life in the process.

As students sought refuge in adjacent classrooms, they desperately stacked desks and bookshelves behind the door. However, they found no way to secure it.

Moved by this heart-wrenching story, Nikolas Ackerman was determined to find a solid solution. He drew similarities between this selfless student and his own Boy Scouts troop. He was frustrated that anyone would have to make such a sacrifice, and so he envisioned a solution that would work across entire school systems and keep children safe.

This vision led to the creation of DoorBlockade—a device designed to offer fast, reliable, secure protection behind any internal door.
